A sumptuously magical, brand new take on a tale as old as time – read the Beast’s side of the story at long last.
I am neither monster nor man – yet I am both.
I am the Beast.
I know why I was cursed; I know the legacy of evil I carry in my tainted blood. So how could she ever love me?
My Isabeau. She opened my eyes, my mind and my heart when I was struggling just to be human.
And now I might lose her forever.
I am a massive fan of the Beauty and The Beast movies (original and remake) so a retelling of the story was right up my alley. It can be a bit tricky with retellings because you know the story, so the author needs to either make the characters really engaging or put a creative spin on it for the book to hold up. I am so pleased to say that Shallcross has don’t this in spades.
This book is from the perspective of the Beast, so we see his emotions and motivation up close. The author has done a spectacular job at making him human, even when he wasn’t. I felt so much for him. He doing his best to cling onto his humanity and he desperate to break his curse.
In regards to Belle or Isabeau as she is called, we see just how much she struggles not only with missing her family but also a certain picture that haunts her dreams. I love how the author included the later in this novel, it gave the dynamic between Isabeau and the Beast much more depth.
Overall it is missing talking candelabras and tea cups but hey, it is still brilliant!
