VICTORY COMES AT A PRICE.
Mare Barrow learned this all too well when Cal’s betrayal nearly destroyed her. Now determined to protect her heart-and secure freedom for Reds and newbloods like her-Mare resolves to overthrow the kingdom of Norta once and for all . . . starting with the crown on Maven’s head.
But no battle is won alone, and before the Reds may rise as one, Mare must side with the boy who broke her heart in order to defeat the boy who almost broke her. Cal’s powerful Silver allies, alongside Mare and the Scarlet Guard, prove a formidable force. But Maven is driven by an obsession so deep, he will stop at nothing to have Mare as his own again, even if it means demolish everything – and everyone – in his path.
War is coming, and all Mare has fought for hangs in the balance. Will victory be enough to topple the Silver kingdoms? Or will the little lightning girl be forever silenced?
657 pages! Wholly moley what a mammoth book for this genre. So much needed to happen in this final book and a lot has been jammed into these pages.
In this final instalment we are told the story from Mare, Cal, Evangeline, Iris and Mavens points of view. Surprisingly for myself I think I like Evangelines POV the most. She just has so much sass and sarcasm, along with a lot of love.
There are loads of battle scenes which is awesome because I love seeing the different abilities play against one another. These also help to ensure that the plot doesn’t lag for too long, with bursts of excitement breaking up some meaningful dialogue.
There were multiple times during this book that I wanted to punch Cal in the face. He would probably throw a fireball at me but I think it would have been worth it. Make a decision Cal! Use your own brain and make a bloody decision.
On to the other brother… Maven, Maven, Maven oh how I wanted so much more for you. I have always been so conflicted by him. Yes he has done these absolutely terrible things but they weren’t ever really by his on volition. It’s just hard to truly hate him.
Mare is everything you expect her to be and her personality doesn’t waiver. She knows what is right and puts her life on the line time and time again to fight for it. I was very pleased with how her character faired in the end. I think Aveyard did her story justice.
The ending itself… Well I won’t go too much into that because I don’t want to spoil it for anyone. Did I love it? No but I understand why it ended how it did. Did I like it? Yes, absolutely!
Rise, red as the dawn!
