The Summer Seaside Kitchen

Flora is definitely, absolutely sure that escaping from the quiet Scottish island where she grew up to the noise and hustle of the big city was the right choice. What was there for her on Mure? It’s a place where everyone has known her all her life, and no one will let her forget the past. In the city, she can be anonymous, ambitious and indulge herself in her hopeless crush on her gorgeous boss, Joel.

When a new client demands Flora’s presence back on Mure, she’s suddenly swept back into life with her brothers (all strapping, loud and seemingly incapable of basic housework) and her father. As Flora indulges her new-found love of cooking and breathes life into the dusty little pink-fronted shop on the harbour, she’s also going to have to come to terms with past mistakes – and work out exactly where her future lies…

My Review

This book takes a journey to the fictitious Island of Mure, located at the northern most reaches of Scotland. Mure has a unique culture and is quite a different centric location to what we normally see from Jenny Colgan. It is sparce yet beautiful, remote yet engaging. I personally would love to pack up my bags, grab 100 coats and visit the island of Mure!

Jenny Colgan has many strengths as a writer and one of them is creating female leads that are strong, engaging and flawed. Flora is no exception. She is intelligent, hard working, but battles with her family. Whilst she is world’s away from myself in terms of location and lifestyle, she is so relateable at a core level.

Joel’s story line was one that I was not expecting and I couldn’t have anticipated how much I loved learning more about him. On face value he is shallow, but you should never judge someone on face value alone.

Overall it is wonderful, witty, vibrant and I can’t wait to revisit Mure in the future. Oh, and of course for all you foodies out there Jenny has includes recipes in the back (would you expect anything less!).
