“In a house haunted by memories, the past is everywhere…
As darkness falls, a man caught in a snowstorm is forced to shelter at the strange, grim house, Wuthering Heights. It is a place he will never forget. There he will come to learn the story of Cathy: how she was forced to choose between her well-meaning husband and the dangerous man she had loved since she was young. How her choice led to betrayal and terrible revenge – and continues to torment those in the present.”
Penguin Books synopsis
So, I found this a bit strange but I liked this book despite the fact I did not like any of the characters. Heathcliff and Cathy alike are foremost selfish individuals and treat others as garbage. Edgar has no backbone and is a fool, as is his insufferable sister Isabella.
The children are just as bad as their parents with Catherine being pig-headed and so naive. Linton is a manipulative child with a wicked streak. Thank heavens for Nelly being a voice of reason in this strange tale.
If you are expecting a “big twist” that we tend to have come accustomed to in a lot off novels nowadays then you will be disappointed. This is simply a very well written book about an abhorrent man who loved one person and treated everyone else however he pleased. Frankly, Heathcliff is an arse hole and he does not deserve a happy ending. If he got one in the end, I will leave that for you to decide.
