The Christmas Surprise by Jenny Colgan

Author: Jenny Colgan • Category: Romance • Series: Rosie Hopkins • Pages:432

I feel I should preface this review by stating that I am a Jenny Colgan fan fanatic. I currently own 19 of her books and lucky me is getting number 20 for Christmas (Christmas at Little Beach Street Bakery- be on the look out for that review early in the new year). So, I like her style of writing and am yet to find an equal romance author that has the perfect mix of humour, love and drama.

Overview

The Christmas Surprise is the third book set around the character of Rosie Hopkins- sweetshop owner in the village of Lipton. Rosie moved to Lipton a couple of years back to help her ailing great aunt Lilian and ended up falling for her now fiancé Stephen the future Lord Lipton. Of course things didn’t go exactly smoothly but Rosie has ended up with wonderful friends and her own little slice of happiness.

We meet up with Rosie just after her engagement to Stephen and they are in bliss until two tragic events lead to the opportunity of unexpected happiness for both of them. Can they make it work and overcome the obstacles in their way, to have a merry Christmas?

My Review

This book is great for a Christmas read. It is both light and emotional at the same time, while filled with hope which seems to be a Jenny Colgan speciality. I must say that I did find the plot more predictable than the previous two books, which for me was a bit of a let down. Despite this, the journey to the end (regardless of its predictability) was still rich and engaging. The author has managed to stay true to the core personality of the characters in this book but also has demonstrated how they have grown, especially regarding the relationship between Rosie and Stephen. Some of the other storylines did seem a bit farcical, but it is fiction after all. Quite a nice, happy read even if it is somewhat predictable.

Overall Rating: cupcupcupcup 4/5 teacups
